USA Sunday River
Sunday River has grown in recent years to become one of the best ski mountains in New England for its terrain and for its long tradition of dependable conditions. Nestled in Maine's Western Mountains, it comprises a long ridge (3 miles from east to west) boasting 8 interconnected peaks with exceptional views of the Mahoosuc Mountains and Mount Washington. There are 663 acres of terrain and some of the most extensive snowmaking in the East. Beginners and intermediates are particularly well served, with a wide variety of long, wide pistes, while experts will enjoy the challenging narrow doubleblack runs on White Cap and Barker Mountain - as well as excellent glade skiing on Aurora, Oz and Jordan Bowl. Sunday River is fantastic for school groups, with accommodation conveniently situated close to the slopes and extremely helpful resort staff. The resort offers excellent progression for beginners, with an ideal starting point at the South Ridge Base Lodge, with wide and gentle slopes. Children are particularly well catered for here on and off the slopes, with activities including skating, snow tubing and video games. The picture-postcard town of Bethel is a 10-min drive away and has numerous eclectic speciality shops, antique barns and a multiplex cinema. |
