Italy Passo Tonale Passo Tonale is situated on the high mountain pass at the head of the Val Vermiglio, straddling the provinces of Trento and Lombardy. With an altitude of 1800 meters and most skiing above the tree line, good snow cover is guaranteed. The resort is very popular with school groups for a simple reason – it is probably the best beginners resort there is. There are 80 km of pistes, and these are ideally suited to beginners and intermediates. Beginners’ nursery slopes are linked to the many blue runs, which make it convenient to achieve fast and satisfying progress onto more challenging slopes. But it is the intermediates who enjoy the bulk of the skiing here. From the halfway point of the Nigritella chairlift, the intermediate who takes the covered fast 4-seater chairlift to Cima Bleis will be rewarded with a long 4.5 km run in spectacular scenery. Climb higher on yet another bubble chair to reach the more challenging Contrabandieri with views across the whole valley. There are also some fast runs for advanced skiers in Passo Tonale. On the south side of the village the Paradiso cable car rises to 2585m and from here there is a knee trembling black run under the cable car. The area is good for snowboarding, with most of the pistes wide open. There is an excellent 4.5 km run from the top of the Valbilio chair back to the village - this run also provides access to various ungroomed pistes, a great playground after a fresh fall of new snow.
